ILAS Celebrates 30 Years - Promoting awareness of insurance law issues since 1994

“A first informal meeting was convened in 1994, which was attended mainly by lawyers. The consensus was that the intention was not to form an Insurance Lawyers’ Association but an Insurance Law Association that would require the active involvement of the people in the insurance industry.”

The Insurance Law Association of Singapore (ILAS) has been at the forefront in promoting awareness and understanding of insurance law issues since its inception in 1994. As the Singapore chapter of the Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances (AIDA), ILAS is deeply entrenched in a global network comprising 50 national associations and 30 Working Parties, all dedicated to the advancement of insurance laws worldwide.

At the heart of ILAS’s mission lies the commitment to foster knowledge and expertise in insurance law within the Singaporean insurance industry. Through a series of seminars, discussions, and articles ILAS provides a platform for prominent insurance experts from Singapore, the region, and beyond to share insights and engage in meaningful discourse. These events not only elevate understanding but also drive the development and application of insurance laws in the local context.

What sets ILAS apart is its unique position at the crossroads of insurance practice and insurance law. By bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders including lawyers, insurance practitioners, insurtech experts, and academics, ILAS facilitates collaboration that enriches both the industry and the legal framework in Singapore.

ILAS’s significance extends beyond Singapore's borders. As the only National Chapter in Asia, apart from counterparts in Hong Kong, China, and Japan, ILAS serves as a vital link in the wider Asian insurance landscape. Alongside its counterparts in Australia and New Zealand, ILAS forms part of the six National Chapters in the Asia Pacific region, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among members. Additionally, ILAS maintains strategic partnerships, such as the Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA), enabling members of both associations to access key benefits, enhancing opportunities for networking and professional development.

Strategically located at One Fullerton, overlooking the iconic Merlion of Singapore, ILAS's registered office symbolizes its strong presence and commitment to the insurance landscape of Singapore. In alignment with AIDA’s overarching mission since 1960, ILAS continues to contribute to the study, knowledge, and understanding of international and national insurance laws. With a global network of nearly 10,000 individuals dedicated to this cause, ILAS remains steadfast in its pursuit of promoting awareness of insurance law issues, both locally and globally.
